A hidden wetland full of life, right in the heart of Abingdon
Tucked among houses in east Abingdon, Abbey Fishponds is a small but remarkable nature reserve. Water shapes everything here, flowing, pooling and quietly supporting a surprising abundance of wildlife. Step inside and it becomes a green refuge, where the sounds and movement of nature take over.
Water everywhere
A brook winds through the reserve, joined by ponds, seasonal pools and wet grassland, each supporting different forms of life.
More than meets the eye
Despite its size, this site holds a rich variety of species – plants, insects, birds and mammals all find space here.
A haven in town
Surrounded by homes, it offers a pocket of calm where nature continues to thrive.
Wildlife up close
Look out for water voles along the margins, butterflies in sunny clearings and frogs and newts in the water.
Explore the reserve
Paths crisscross this compact space, leading you through a mix of habitats.
You’ll find:
- Wet grassland and reedbeds
- Shaded woodland patches
- Mini meadows alive with insects
- Quiet corners beside the water
It’s easy to explore – and always slightly different each time.

- Take a gentle walk through the changing habitats
- Pause on the bridge and watch for movement
- Look for butterflies and birds through the seasons
- Spot the frogspawn, signalling the start of spring
A place shaped by people and nature
An embankment running through the reserve was once thought to be a medieval fishpond dam linked to Abingdon Abbey. More recent evidence suggests it may be part of a Roman causeway.
Whatever its origins, this landscape has been shaped over centuries – and is now a place where nature is quietly reclaiming space.
Wildlife & Conservation
Wetland habitats like these are increasingly rare, but here they support a remarkable range of life.
The reserve is home to:
Over 200 species of flowering plants.
A wide range of birds and butterflies.
Amphibians including frogs and newts.
Mammals such as bats and water voles
Our work focuses on protecting and improving wetland habitats, managing vegetation to support wildlife, and keeping the site accessible for the community.

- Be mindful of wildlife and local residents
- No BBQs or fires

How this place is cared for
Abbey Fishponds is leased from Vale of White Horse District Council and has been managed by Earth Trust since 2014, with the support of dedicated volunteers.
