Madeleine’s special place in nature: Wittenham Clumps

Madeleine has been volunteering at Earth Trust as part of her Duke of Edinburgh Award. Living nearby, she has been a regular visitor to the Clumps with her family, and in this blog, she shares with us what this special place in nature means to her.

Wittenham Clumps is more than just a pair of hills – it’s my place. The place I go when I need to clear my head, when I want to feel the wind rush past me at the top of the hill, or when I just need a break from screens and school stress. It’s the kind of place that makes you stop and take a deep breath, where you feel totally free.

A place with so much history

Wittenham Clumps is one of Oxfordshire’s oldest landmarks, with a history stretching back thousands of years. The two hills – Round Hill and Castle Hill – have shaped the skyline and inspired artists, poets, and nature lovers for centuries.

Standing at the top, you can see why – it’s got the best views for miles. It’s kind of mind-blowing to think that centuries ago, someone was standing in the exact same spot, looking out over the land just like I do now.

It’s no wonder artists like Paul Nash were drawn to this place, calling it “a sacred place.” Walking through Wittenham Clumps feels like stepping through history.

A place full of life

But it’s not just the history that makes this place special – it’s also alive. The woods, the grasslands, the wildlife – they all change with the seasons. Thanks to Earth Trust, this area continues to thrive, ensuring that these natural habitats remain protected.

In spring, birds sing from the branches and butterflies dance around the wildflowers. In summer, the grass is warm and dry, and red kites soar overhead. Autumn turns the beech trees golden, and winter brings frost-covered grass, silent mornings and the calls of owls at dusk. Every visit feels different, and I love that.

Aswell as the wildlife, its wonderful to walk amongst the gently grazing cattle; its lovely to see them going about their day!

A place that brings people together

More than anything, Wittenham Clumps is a place for people – it’s about memories. I’ve been here with friends, racing to the top just to say we did it. I’ve walked here with family, talking about everything and nothing. And sometimes, I just come alone, sitting under the trees, listening to the wind, and letting my mind wander.

It’s a place where you can just be – away from distractions, away from pressure. And I know I’m not the only one who feels that way. Wittenham Clumps means something special to so many people. That’s why it’s so important to keep it safe.

A future worth protecting

Wittenham Clumps has been loved for generations, but if we don’t look after it, it won’t stay this way.  Places like Wittenham Clumps don’t take care of themselves. Climate change, habitat loss, and more people visiting than ever before are putting this landscape at risk.

That’s why Earth Trust’s work is so important – caring for the land and looking after the wildlife, ensuring people can continue to enjoy this incredible place responsibly.

How you can help

In a few weeks, Earth Trust is launching a fundraising appeal to help care for Wittenham Clumps and other special green spaces like it. And the best part – every donation will be match-funded, meaning whatever you give will have twice the impact.

Now’s the time to think about what nature means to you. Do you have a place like Wittenham Clumps that makes you feel free, inspired, or at peace? The appeal launches on 22nd April, Earth Day, when we’ll all have the chance  to give back and help safeguard these landscapes for the future.

Let’s make sure Wittenham Clumps stays wild, beautiful, and supported – so that years from now, another teenager can stand at the top of Castle Hill, take a deep breath, and feel just as free as I do now.
