Earth Trust joins New to Nature programme
Today, the National Lottery funded New to Nature programme announced 60 new work placements for young people aged 18-25. Earth Trust is proud to be among the first wave of host organisations offering a role.
We know from previous research that the UK’s environmental sector is not reflective of the communities it seeks to engage with and serve. The New to Nature programme will see young people aged 18-25 given new, full-time, temporary work placements in nature and landscape organisations across the UK, increasing diversity and enriching the sector.
Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of the celebrations to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the programme will run until May 2024 and provide paid work placements for at least 60 young people from diverse backgrounds to undertake a range of environmental roles.
Dave Lewis, Earth Trust Director of Operations says: “We are delighted to have been chosen to take part in this pioneering project. Creating new paths into the environmental sector for those who may not have had the privilege or opportunities of others is an exciting moment as the green jobs of the future emerge. We look forward to kickstarting someone’s environmental career!”
Life-changing experiences
New to Nature aims to provide life-changing experiences for young people who are disadvantaged in the labour market, whilst building capacity in the environmental sector, making it more inclusive and diverse.
The programme is being delivered through a partnership of Groundwork, The Prince’s Trust, Disability Rights UK, and Mission Diverse and is working closely with the Youth Environmental Service to ensure it acts as a stepping stone for a longer-term journey of change in the sector.
The focus will be on attracting young and diverse talent from communities currently under represented in environmental roles, specifically young people who are from ethnically diverse backgrounds, have a disability or are economically disadvantaged.
