Little Acorns: Winter Birds

An early-year nature adventure for curious young explorers.

Join us for a magical outdoor session all about the birds that brighten our gardens, hedgerows and woodlands through the colder months. Little ones and their grown-ups will explore nature through bird-inspired play, sensory discovery and creative activities that celebrate the wonder of wildlife in winter.

Designed especially for children aged 2–6 and their adults, this cosy winter gathering blends hands-on nature time, storytelling and playful outdoor fun – all wrapped up in Earth Trust’s magical gardens.

What to Expect

🐦 Bird Safari
Set off on a gentle nature walk to find our common winter visitors — perhaps robins, blackbirds or finches — noticing different shapes and colours as you go. Use simple spotter cards or checklists to mark off your sightings.

🌲 Learning – The Hunger Gap Trail
Follow the trail to learn why our winter animals find it so hard to find food in February and how we can all do our bit to help.

🍽️ Build a Winter Bird Café
Create your own bird feeders using natural materials like pine cones, seeds and fat — then hang them up to watch who comes to visit! This activity teaches children about the importance of helping birds find food when insects are scarce.

🪶 Feather Discovery & Sensory Play
Explore real feathers (or safe replicas), feel their textures and learn how feathers help birds stay warm in winter. Match feathers to bird shapes or make feather art to take home.

📖 Story & Snack by the Fire
Gather round a cosy fire pit for a bird-themed story and warm treat — a perfect way to finish your outdoor adventure together.

🌿 Outdoor Activities
With mud kitchen, water play and hammocks – there is so much to explore.
