Nature Reserve

Mowbray Fields

A small reserve full of life and constant change

In the heart of Didcot, Mowbray Fields is a compact reserve where different habitats meet. Meadow, wetland and woodland edge come together, creating a space where something is always happening – if you take the time to look.

Orchids in bloom

In early summer, orchids appear across the wet meadow, bringing colour that shifts from year to year.

A world of insects

Hundreds of invertebrate species makes this a busy, interconnected ecosystem.

Pond life

Spring brings frogspawn and new life in the water.

A mosaic of habitats

Different habitats sit side by side, supporting a wide range of species.

Explore the fields

A central path and raised causeway run through the reserve.

From the viewing platform, you can:

  • Look out across the wet meadow and woodland.
  • Watch insects and birds moving through the site
  • Pause and notice small changes

It’s a short walk with big rewards.

Things to do

  • Visit in early summer for orchids and flowers
  • Look for insects across the meadow
  • Stop and observe what’s happening at the bug hotel

A place shaped by change

This landscape has developed over recent decades, including a pond created to prevent flooding of the adjacent housing estate.

Designated as a Local Nature Reserve in 2000, it has been carefully managed to become a haven for wildlife.

It’s a reminder of what can develop with time and care.

Wildlife & Conservation

Management of this nature reserve focuses on supporting wildlife at every level.

This includes:

Mowing meadows to promote diverse wildflowers.
Cutting scrub to create sunny, open glades.
Supporting pollinators and insects.
Allowing natural processes to shape the site.

Long grass, deadwood and varied habitats provide essential shelter and food for wildlife.

Take care when you visit

This is a small but important site. Please:

  • Keep dogs under close control
  • Stick to paths
  • Take litter home
  • Leave plants and wildlife undisturbed
