An Evening of Films by Nicola Schafer

Stories from Oxfordshire’s Landscapes

Join us for an inspiring evening of documentary film and conversation, exploring some of Oxfordshire’s most remarkable places and the people working to protect, restore and connect communities with nature.

The evening will feature three short films by award-winning filmmaker Nicola Schafer, each telling a different story from across the county’s landscapes and communities.

Whether you’re passionate about wildlife, interested in nature recovery, or simply enjoy powerful storytelling, this promises to be an engaging and thought-provoking evening celebrating the people and places shaping Oxfordshire’s natural future.

A River Sings (19 mins)

The inspiring story of how restoring rivers and harnessing nature has helped prevent flooding, benefitted farmers and had astonishing results for wildlife.
A River Sings looks at four projects in the Evenlode catchment, showing how local landowners have successfully implemented these techniques on their estates.

Walking with Dadima’s Community (9 mins)

Walking with Dadima’s Community is shot entirely on the Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve in the south of the county. The reserve is important for its chalk grassland and rare orchids. This film tells the story of Dadima’s walking group, an intergenerational, multicultural group that aims to make the countryside more accessible to people of all backgrounds.

Inside the Ruskin Reserve (approx. 15 mins)

Inside the Ruskin Reserve explores the precious and rare habitat at Cothill Fen near Abingdon. This is a very important alkaline fen, and supports numerous plants of insects, many of which are vanishingly rare. Since the restoration of the fen by volunteers the fen has flourished, however climate change and land use remain challenges that threaten it’s future.

Panel Discussion

Following the screenings, stay for a panel discussion featuring contributors from the films, including conservationists, community leaders and filmmaker Nicola Schafer. Together, they’ll share insights into the stories behind the films and discuss the opportunities and challenges facing nature recovery and community engagement across Oxfordshire.

The evening will conclude with informal drinks and the chance to continue the conversation.
