Work Experience

Earth Trust offers a diverse range of learning opportunities, including work experience placements within our Land Management and Environmental Education teams.

Land Management

Joining the Land Management team you will get a taste of the practical work required to look after the Earth Trust Farm. This changes a lot over the year but may include repairing fences or gates, working out in the woods or collecting firewood to keep our boiler going over the winter. You’ll work with some of our excellent volunteers on all kinds of habitat management, learning how to use a variety of tools to ensure that the farm is a haven for people and wildlife.

Environmental Education

Joining the Environmental Education team you can expect to shadow our tutors delivering sessions to Earth School groups. This will involve helping to set up for the day, going out with the group and helping with hands on practical activities, such as fire lighting, bug hunting or pond dipping. Please note you will at no time be responsible for children or delivering activities on your own. You will get involved with other activities like supporting the team to prep equipment and materials or helping in the office.

We want you to get the most out of your work experience with us, and therefore we ask that you demonstrate an interest in the work we carry out. It is also important to ask lots of questions, be enthusiastic and get involved.

FAQs

What is the minimum age for work experience with Earth Trust?

You must be 16 or over. Unfortunately, we cannot accept anyone under the age of 16.

Who do I need to contact to apply?

Send an email to our Volunteer Officer stating whether you are interested in Land Management or Environmental Education. You will then be sent an application form and asked in for an informal chat.

What paperwork do I need to complete before my placement?

As well as the application form, your parent/guardian will need to sign a parental consent form. Without this signed consent you will not be able to commence your placement. Please send these forms back to us as soon as possible.

What is expected of me during my placement?

Work experience is a great opportunity to get a taste of what it is like to have a job, and therefore it is important to take it seriously. Please do return the required forms on time, and get in touch if you have any questions. Arrive on time each day and make sure you dress appropriately for what you will be doing (guidance will be given ahead of your placement). It is important to engage with your work experience, and therefore please do not use your mobile phone during work hours (you will be able to use it during your lunch break).

You are a small charity, how do you manage work experience?

As a small organisation, we do have limited capacity for work experience. Please get in touch and we will see if your requested dates are available.

What else do I need to know?

Earth Trust is located in a rural location between Abingdon, Didcot and Wallingford, we are not on the route of any method of public transport. Therefore, you will need to have your own transportation or another method of getting here each day. There is also nowhere to purchase food on site, so you will need to bring a packed lunch with you. We do have a kitchen at the centre to get water and hot drinks, and tea kits are taken out with work parties if you are working with Land Management.

Who will be leading my work experience?

Whether you are with Land Management or Environmental Education, all of our staff are incredibly passionate about what they do and are a font of knowledge – ask lots of questions!
