During Winter 2019/20, we are partnering with DigVentures to undertake extensive archaeological exploration ahead of our Gateway project. This will allow us to discover more about how people in the past lived and used the green spaces we look after today.
As part of our archaeology, we are inviting the public to come and see the dig for themselves through a number of events, including tours and Finds Lab sessions.
In 2020, there will be further opportunities to get involved through a community dig. Details will be announced soon, so do keep an eye on our archaeology page.
Finds Lab Sessions
Join DigVentures for a day in the archaeologists’ finds room to find out what happens to artefacts once they’re out of the ground. You’ll learn how to clean, sort, handle, identify and interpret a range of different materials and artefacts, and be guided by the experts.
The session includes learning how to properly care for newly found artefacts, and develop an understanding of what we can learn from them. You’ll then be shown how to properly clean and store artefacts, before being taught how to sort, identify and records finds.
The Finds Lab sessions are running for one week in 2020, from Tuesday 28th January to Sunday 2nd February. Each one-day session runs from 9.30am to 3.30pm, and all you need to bring is a packed lunch and some enthusiasm! These are suitable for adults or children over the age of 12.
A limited number of discounted places are available each day, and are on offer to Earth Trust Volunteers and Friends, and to students.
