FREE Countryside Skills Taster Sessions
Earth Trust’s Countryside Skills course has been running for over 20 years and offers accredited training to pupils who find the traditional academic environment challenging. We are looking to expand the number of schools we work with and are offering free taster sessions this term.
Countryside Skills is accredited by Open College Network (OCN) Credit4Learning. Students work towards a qualification through completing four units: Planting and Woodland Management, Animal Husbandry, Leisure and Recreation, and Personal Development and Health & Safety.
“The course is ideal for pupils who find the traditional academic environment challenging and would benefit from all of the advantages that outdoor learning can offer. Students gain a vast range of skills but also a wealth of experience and confidence which filters through to the rest of their school and personal lives, and can push them on to achieve more in further education,” explains Hollie Thompson, our Countryside Skills Coordinator.
Practical sessions take place on the Earth Trust Farm here in Little Wittenham, where our 500ha of nature reserve and working farm provides the perfect outdoor classroom. Activities range from cooking on a fire to assisting our shepherdess during the lambing season, and from coppicing the woodland to building bird boxes. Students typically attend for one 2 hour practical session each week for one to three years. Back in school, the students complete a weekly diary detailing the work conducted and fill in a workbook designed specifically for the course by our staff.
We are currently offering taster sessions to interested parties free of charge. Sessions will run on Tuesday and Friday afternoons (1pm – 3pm) for between 5 and 12 students.
We are also able to offer short 4-6 week courses as enrichment for students who are struggling in an academic setting, to boost their confidence and social skills.
If you would like further information about the course or would like to book a taster session, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with Hollie.
