11 Green Flags for Wallingford Castle Meadows!

Wallingford Castle Meadows is recognised as one of the UK’s very best green spaces.

Castle Meadows in Wallingford has been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the very best in the world, and has received Green Heritage Site Accreditation for the fifth consecutive year.

Castle Meadows joins a record-breaking 1,883 UK parks and green spaces that will today receive a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space. This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.

Wallingford Castle Meadows is 16 hectares of hay meadow and floodplain on the banks of the River Thames, and contains the remains of one of the greatest medieval castles in England. As well as being historically significant, it is also an important site for wildlife and is home to birds, bats, bluebells and more! It is a wonderful place for local residents to have on their doorstep. The Earth Trust has managed the nature reserve for the last 18 years on behalf of South Oxfordshire District Council.

Lucy Tomkinson, Community Reserves Warden for the Earth Trust said: “We are absolutely thrilled to receive a Green Flag Award for 11th year. We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors, and this award celebrates the dedication that goes into maintaining Castle Meadows to such a high standard.”

Castle Meadows has also received the much coveted additional Green Heritage Site Accreditation for the management of the historic features for the 5th year.

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme, with more Green Flags awarded this year than last year. Each flag honours the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. We are proud to have so many wonderful green spaces in the UK for people to enjoy, and hope that next year, we award even more flags.”
